Description

...silicovolcanoconiosis is the title.
Commonly known as black lung. Although that has nothing to do with the piece's concept.
This was done as my first project for Foundations II.
Here's my formal critique:

This sculpture is an abstraction of the space within the human body. It analyzes the placement of the organs and bones in the chest area and shows the protection that the body gives to the heart. I used lines and planes to create negative space that would help me convey that idea. I used planes to create the shape of the organs and make them identifiable while using lines (dowels) to make the piece more three-dimensional and make it easier to create a sense of nestled safety with the heart as the focal point. I used negative space efficiently to show the contents of the contained forms and make the composition flow more. I also used implied line to continue parts of the organs and bones and provide a minimalist approach to the contents of the human body. The composition has a strong sense of balance and overall unity to it, due to its symmetrical nature and use of color respectively. The piece conveys movement with the manipulation of wire.
I learned from this project that nails are horrible at going through dowels smoothly and that I am better off gluing the dowels to the body of the piece, no matter how lame the structural integrity may be. Also, I should have made a more sturdy design that would bind the lungs together more.
My project presents its message very plainly in a concise form without much unnecessary detail. While being an abstraction, it still is representative and easily identified as a set of lungs and a heart. On the flip side, I think the craftsmanship is not up to my normal standards and the design is slightly skewed. The painting is splotchy and inconsistent. Otherwise, I’m moderately proud of this piece.
